Arduino board is very useful tool for creating logic controlled units to bypass mechanic systems using electronic. To be honest i dont posses much knowledge about electronics only some basic knowledge that i learned from E-books Youtube an other free accessible internet sources and i learned to program and use Arduino board to almos every purpose. It gives huge possibilities, what you need is electronic elements, it depends on what you building and basics in C or C++ programing. For the beginning you can learn those on youtube or any other websites that provides tutorials on programing. Arduino have its own programing language i would say its based on C language but uses commands that make it more easy to work with electronic parts. You can find a schematic diagram to build your own ( you will still have to buy Atmega microcontroller) or you can buy ready to program/use Boards. There are usb, ethernet, Bluetooth and Wlan Versions that alows you to interact with your circuit in both ways from pc what give more posibilities to monitor sensors or controll ellements connected to your circuit. Processing is an programing language for writing programs with GUI (Graphic user interface) based on Java it can be used to work together with Arduino, Both are created by the same Developer (im not sure but its looks like it is) the program is open source so it can be downloaded for free.
